(The Trojan Women) - HWS Rembiko 4 silver bats 10 08 07 - A Rembiko (USA) High School project from California on its 7th biennial visit to the Fringe. Rembiko are presenting an ambitious program of several shows including this one, based on Euripides, 'The Trojan Women.' With a beautiful tableau opening, this is a Greek tragedy with an American twang but the weeping and wailing is timeless! Zoe Johnson (Cassandra) emerges as a promising artist and becomes the focus of the show with a powerful singing talent whose appearances onstage the audience I came to quite look forward to. Its the operatic version of how the Greeks took Troy and divided up its spoils including the women, to reap their vengeance. Carolyn Berliner's performance as Hectors wife Andromache, was also well received by an appreciative audience. The show was layered in many tortured female expressions, much huddling and scenes of women comforting each other and many members of the audience seemed genuinely moved as the grim tale progressed. With the bodies piling up on stage towards the end, the score seemed a little 'too happy' for such a dark tale though the musicianship throughout was proficient, if lacking in flair. by John Vassallo
