Intended as a comedy it may well be quite funny in its own country to fellow Frenchmen and women. It certainly had some of the cartoon qualities of the adventures of Asterix the Gaul and his sidekick Obelix! The notes accompanying the show underline its serious intent as a comedic treatise on the subject of 'exclusion.' Nevertheless, they say, even the most ostracised by society can find dignity in a sincere relationship to others. As for the show, it has its moments, as for instance when the monumental set collapses around Jean-Paul Vigier and Thierry Dupre in the opening scene. The relationship that exists between the two is obviously tense judging from the added destruction they wreak on each others stuff (six-packs and a guitar) following the early collapse of the set. From then on the story is unlikely, sometimes ponderous, often obscure in its delivery but with some redeeming brilliant touches to keep at least some of the audience interested. There is a brilliant scene in which a multimedia projection plays in a wardrobe and the real life characters are suddenly in the projection. Trying to make sense of where the show is coming from is quite hard but the clowning throughout is evident even if its in a post modernist French style and the clowning has a message. The show certainly seemed to be inspired by comic books, cartoons and silent movies. The show ended with a gallic rock n roll number, the sound quality in the venue was excellent but the music just became a wall of noise, more parody perhaps? Overall a rather conceptual show but judging by the applause and roses the company gave them at the end of their run Jean-Paul Vigier and Thierry Dupre, have a very sincere relationship with their colleagues!
