This was the one night the show was in Polish and even with rolling English subtitles projected adjacent to the action, the tragicomic aspects of the monologue were largely inaccessible on the basis of what was happening onstage anyway. The show was poorly attended and this underlined its pathos as it tended to suggest that no one, not even the Polish community, really cared about the story either. The whole experience was pretty heavy going as the narrative dealt with old lady Walerka attempting to continue to function in the face of her increasingly incapacitating memory loss and dementia. Gabriela Muskala is a young actress and I believe, was cast in the role to better bridge the gap between younger audiences and the pathos of the situation. Gabriela in white, struck a lonely figure onstage in the huge, darkened Freemasons Hall with only a very sparse audience of twelve but to her credit persevered to the end. By John Vassallo
