Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare's great plays, a comedy of cross-dressing, mistaken identity, deception, cruelty, gender confusion, ambition, and love. This show is in the best traditions of student companies that have graced the fringe with their hard work and bright optimism. Their unique interpretation is to set the play in a Goth, rock and alternative music scene sub culture and play up the dark sensual and erotic aspects. This involves Goth and rock clothing, spiked collars, corsetry, rubber suits, much bare flesh and some self conscious kink. While this does not fail to entertain, the show is by no means perfect and has some pretty disastrous moments in it. Some of the audience entered late and left early, the amount of disbelief required to be suspended to enjoy the production being a bit too much even for hardened fringe goers. Its a bit of a spoof that seemed to emanate from the earliest days of the Fringe sent to perplex modern, more sophisticated audiences. The sound quality was a major weakness, the cast sometimes struggled to make themselves heard and the sound tracks that accompanied music and dance did not seem to be digitally mastered. It was an interesting experience but overall rather rough around the edges. It has some sexy, entertaining and genuinely 'funny peculiar' and 'funny haha' moments but at two hours, it was overall a rather painful experience to get to them. By John Vassallo
